Comments:Re Midland Clarion Team of Mid-Fifties. I was fastest 4th man.... Did you know that Colin Clarke died last year. Geoff Morris had died a year earlier in Australia. Jim Ogden is still cycling (as I am, casually) and lives in Macclesfield. I have photos somewhere of 1955 Team and Reunion of same team 5 years back...I still ride my Team Bike, the one on both photos, but with flat bars and gears these days.

Needless to say, agreement is not expected and feedback welcomed. Yours for a world of free access, R Internet Department Socialist Party Fellowship is Life. Denis Pye, Clarion Publishing, £4.95. This is a very fine history of what was a probably an unnecessary organisation, based on what was a very nasty journal indeed. In this slim, but well illustrated and superbly presented, volume, Pye gives an excellent account of the background and development of the Clarion Cycling Club and its one-time companions in the Clarion movement. The book is a very useful addition to the field of Labour history as a history of The Clarion and its associated organisations has never before been written. The Clarion, or ‘The Perisher’ as was colloquially known, was a very popular ‘socialist’ journal, established in 1891 and

It is sadness that I report the death of my father Harry Penna Brooks at the age of 81 on Wednesday 10th September. He loved his cycling and died in his cycling gear having just returned home from a short ride. At the time of his death he was checking a cycling website with a view to buying yet another new bike. The family and friends wish to thank Clarion for all the happy hours and pleasure he derived from the club throughout his life. As my father often said to me when the the going got tough, "Keep 'em turning lad." May I wish the club all the best for the future. Your's sincerely Tom Brooks

I joined the Clarion Cyc. Club in the 1950s. when large cycling groups still went forth to North Wales. Everyone met at `Two Mills' and the feeling amongst riders was still very supportive and social. Our group in Moreton organised games at the beach which were played on long summer evenings. Long may the Clarion ride and good luck to all members!

You state on your pages "The future Long gone are the banner waving days, this has been replaced by a new feeling of direction that will take the Clarion probably 10 years to evolve into a new style of cycling club. A club without bureaucracy, a club more concerned with the environment and cyclists issues than trying to replace the BCF or CTC. The Clarion will continue as a movement for cyclists who care about each other and the outdoors and the membership will forge this new purpose from within. The variety of activities within the world of cycling will still be part of the Clarion and so will the unique feeling of fellowship by its members". I'm still not clear. Are you still a cycling club guided by socialist principles?

http://www.halesowencyling.net We at Halesowen need your help. We are raising funds to support our lottery application for the resurfacing of the track. We need to raise £18,000 and one of the ways you can help would be to "ADOPT-A-METRE" for the small sum of £10. We have already raised £560 in three weeks and without advertising. All who "ADOPT-A-Metre" will receive a certificate detailing the metre/s they have adopted and at the end of the project, each name will be displayed by way of a plaque on the safety fence. You can find out details of how to "ADOPT-A-METRE" on our web site at: www.halesowencycling.net or by contacting me at: richard.robotham@lineone.net Please help to secure another 50 years of racing @ Halesowen. Hi Julian Alas I will not be at the Easter Meet - going to China. Trust you an the Mrs will be going to liven up the weekend. I am secretary of Bury now. Frank as you may know is no longer National Secretary. I have volunteered to take on the treasurer's job - provisonal at the moment. I shall soon be opening a page on our website for sales. Can you think about opening one for the National Clarion stock - racing vests £?, shorts £?, caps £3.00?, Badges - £3.00 definite each. I understand that Crew Clarion Wheelers 25 is our national championship - our Philip Albiez is keen to compete in this event again. He was third last year. Exciting things happening in the Clarion now - national pursuit squad. I saw Derek's name in Cycling last week as a National Clarion rider. Cheers Peter.

I remember Dave Hurford and Mick Fretwell both regulars then. Also Mike Henry. Where are you now? Still cycling but not racing anymore. keep up the good work. Mike
