THE CLARION TEN CHAMPIONSHIP HELD IN CONJUNCTION WITH BOLTON CLARION TEN 24 APRIL 2004

On an ideal day for racing 13 Clarion members faced the timekeeper although only three of these Philip Albiez, Andy Horner and Paul Dickinson could be considered in contention for the championship. The others though were not only supporting a Clarion event but scoring valuable points for their section in the points competition. As he was warming up on his rollers Philip Albiez was informed that Andy and Paul had tied the previous week posting twenty two minute tens. In response he said I’ll have to do a 21 minute ten then. This he did to take the title by 16 seconds from Andy. Alas Pauline Cooper a second claim member of Oakhill was in collision with a car arising from the inattention of another vehicle driver. Fortunately she was not too badly injured and was released from hospital the same day. She scored five points for starting the event. The police stopped the race but only ten riders did not complete their ride and it did not affect the Clarion championship. With no ladies team Jayne Bevitt takes the Bert Brown Trophy with a sterling 26min 49 sec ride. Please advise Peter Roscoe if any second claim members have been missed.

THE CLARION FIFTY CHAMPIONSHIP HELD IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE MDTTA 24 JULY 2004.

With the shortest handicap of the Clarion riders in the field and a recent 1.56.30 under his belt Paul Dickinson, Bolton Clarion, was the clear favourite to win the inaugural 50 championship. However, with Andy Horner, also of Bolton, and Derek Hodgins, Stockport riding as a National Clarion entrant the outcome was not clear cut. Derek though is no longer doing fast times on sporting courses so he had conceded the title before the start. Andy on the other hand had the confidence to win so he was matching Paul’s starting effort for the first ten miles of the three lap circuit. Stylish Paul though failed to maintain pace on this demanding course made all the harder by a headwind on the final leg of the course. On the other hand Andy was in his element powering through ‘the elements’ to forge ahead on the second two laps to take the title with his  1.59.14 ride against Paul’s 2.3.08. An amazing  71 year old Derek Hodgins returned a 2.7.27 for third place. Frank Jefferson had mechanical trouble but valiantly finished to hold the table up. Please advise Peter Roscoe if any second claim members have been missed.

In what looked like preparation for the Tour of the Peak, Mark Lovatt let the field know how it was going to be the first time up the Hill to the Wanted Man Inn at Sparrowpit.

His attack split the field, stringing out all riders the first time past the finish.

Continued testing of the other riders saw Lovatt, Dobbbin, House & Martin break from the head of the race with Lovatt & Dobbin away after two laps with House & Martin chasing.

On the 3rd lap the four consolidated and a chasing group formed including John Tanner, Matt Sewell, James Sampson, Nathan Turnbull, Andrew Sedgewick, Mike Jones & Mike Kiss.

On lap 4 Lovatt made a decisive attack up to the Wanted Man Inn, gaining 25 seconds at 2 laps to go. This extended to 1’ 58” with 1 lap to go, finally coming home 3’ 12” clear of his rivals.

1st Clarion Rider in the National Clarion Championships went to Dave Langlands of Fenland Clarion. Not bad for a big lad / tester. Other Clarion riders either failed to finish this tough circuit or were a lap down.

Thanks to all the Clarion helpers & marshals who made the event possible. You know how well you did. Thanks.

We are proud to say the event went without a hitch. Winning riders went home happy with decent winnings (thanks to the full field), a bottle of Champagne and a Clarion cap.

Thanks to timekeeper Keith Lightfoot, Ravensthorpe C.C. and assistant timekeeper Sylvia Roscoe for their readiness to help in the running of this event.

That the Clarion is on the up there is no doubt and this event was further evidence of the advance being enjoyed by us all. With five wins under his belt in this event in the last nine years Carl Price was arguably the favourite to win but Andy Horner has been on top form all season. Although he isn’t as lean as Carl he powered himself up the climb to win by an impressive margin. Father and son Andrew and David Skinner had a good day. Andrew besides taking third place also broke the record for the 45 to 49 age group. At thirteen years of age David should be pleased with his eleventh place which also represents a record for his age group. Invariably unsung is the last man but in my view he is a very important person in any competition. I then give my plaudits to Stuart Walsh for ‘having a go’. Stuart had not raced before and having joined on the morning of the event he was our latest member to join. Along with fellow section member Chris Goode he also underpins the section competition of the points league.

I regret that there was no one available to fill in the result board at the finish.

Peter
